New unit of measurement

I think distance should not be measured in miles, but in cigarettes! So, when you ask your friend “How far away is New Jersey?”. Instead of giving the boring answer of “15 miles, they can say “Oh, about 2 cigarettes, but 3 if you’re driving alone; it can be almost a pack during rush hour!”. It’s so much more detailed, and precise that way.  A smoker will know exactly how long it is. Miles are so misleading, because not everyone knows exactly how far away something is. With cigarettes, they will know that 2 cigarettes is around 45 minutes, or 3 if you are driving alone.

I totally think we should write our Congressman, and have street signs change to show how far away cities are, not in boring miles, but in cigarettes! We are only country that uses miles anyway, If US is supposed to be a melting pot where people of all countries are welcomed, we should cater to them more. No one from Kosovo knows what the hell a mile is! They use Kilometers, like the rest of the world. When they come into this country, they have the right to know how far they are from New York, or Chicago, or even Utica. Having the distance in miles will just be confusing for them. Since this country isn’t about to go to the metric system, I feel that using tobacco as a means of measurement is an acceptable alternative.

As an added bonus, marking distance in cigarettes will let everyone in the car know if they have enough left to last the trip, or if they need to stop and by more. In this respect, it’s not only easier, but much more considerate.

It will also probably reduce road rage, as nothing is worse than being stuck in traffic and being out of cigarettes. People in this predicament tend to do dangerous things: like drive on the shoulder of the road, tailgate, or even run down a pedestrian or construction worker. They do this not because they are bad people, but because they desperately need their nicotine fix, and are just trying to get to a store. Why do you think a lot of car chases end at a gas station? Not because that’s where the cops finally pull them over, its because that’s where the car stops, so the driver can get out and get his cigarettes.

Signs like this should be on every major highway in Americ
If the US wants to continue being a leader in the world, it needs to show support, and demonstrate leadership within the Civil Rights Movement; a Hot Button Topic that it is always so quick to demonize other countries for when they fail to accomodate the rights of their oppressed.  Not acknowledging this problem in their own country will leave the US with a Condor-sized egg on it''s face.  If not cigarettes then something else, like Songs on the Radio, or number of construction sites passed.  This problem must be stopped before it gets worse.  Only then can we say we have are truly the leader in the fight for Equal Rights.
