I hate to be a dick here, well, actually, I don't care, but why is everyone so worried and concerned about Haiti? Yeah, they had a bad earthquake and a shitload of people died. Shitloads of people die every day all over the world. We don't send assistance, resources, and money to the families of those people. So, why does Haiti get all this love? Especially considering how bad things are at home right now. Shouldn't we take care of our own people first? There are currently 195 countries in the world, all of whom, with the exception of Vatican City, are members of the UN. Is it too much to ask that one of these other 193 countries take the lead in giving aid? I include Vatican City in my country count because, while it is extremely small in area and population, the Catholic Church is filthy rich. The Vatican is more than Oprah rich; they have more money than God. The Pope shits gold bricks, then wipes his ass with original Da Vinci paintings, after which he drops the soiled paintings into a toilet bowl filled with Laser Printer Ink. After the bricks are safely flushed away, the Pope washes his hands in the Hope Diamond carved out into a sink. He uses Ted Williams’ head as a soap dispenser. After washing his hands, dries them in an air-dryer filled with antimatter….I am just trying to say that the Vatican is not poor. On a side note, of those 194 other countries mentioned above, the US has troops stationed in 135 of them. If that didn't sink in, let me state it another way. The US has military presence in almost three-quarters of the countries in the ENTIRE WORLD. But I swear, we are a peaceful nation! Don't want to get too far off base here. I will get way more into that fact in a future blog, though.
Listen, it really sucks what happened there, but earthquakes happen. Just like other natural, and man-made disasters. Nothing we can do about it. All we can do is say a prayer for the people who it affected; thank God it wasn't us- then move on with our lives. This may sound harsh, but not everyone is supposed to live to be 90. Natural, and other, disasters are a way of population control. There are almost 7 billion people on the same planet there were 2 on a few million years ago. I hate to state the obvious, but the planet hasn't gotten any bigger. That's why natural disasters and man-created deadly viruses are not necessarily a bad thing. Everyone's got to die unfortunately. At least if someone dies in an Earthquake, when an 18-ton bridge fell on their head, we can at least say they died pain free. We should all be so lucky!
It should not be up to the Good Ole' US of A to swoop in and save the day. This country is almost universally despised globally, with very good reason mind you. We should not spend our tax money helping people who hate us, and resent us, especially when there are so many domestic problems that desperately need to be attended to this country is in the biggest recession it has seen since our grandparents were our age. The world is going to Hell- the rich keep getting richer; the middle class keep getting raped; big Corporations control everything and every single day hundreds of small businesses are being forced to shut their doors forever because of the unfair economic playing field. The mass closings and downsizing caused by this economic climate is the main reason for me being out of work since May 2008! Our Government passed this 800 billion dollar stimulus package to supposedly help us right the ship that the large corporation and greedy Wall Street bankers fucked up for us. Well, it’s been a few years, and I don't see any significant change. We're still up shit creek without a paddle. The only thing that’s changed is that now the boat is 2 years older, and is taking on water. A few more years, and we’ll sink, both literally and figuratively.
Actually, I am being much too harsh, sorry about that. I know these Corporations are here to help us. That's why we bailed them out in the first place. We need them! We are helpless without them. How civilization survived for hundreds of thousands of years without department stores, stock trading, cell phones and the internet blows my mind! What the hell did these people do with all their time? I don't know what I would do without Facebook, and that's only been around a few years!
The Government gave the money to big companies so they can keep funding, creating, and selling all those products that we the American Public can't live without. Heaven forbid they go under. If these Financial Behemoths weren't around anymore, there would be nobody left to bribe- Oops! I'm sorry- to "Make campaign contributions", to all our noble Politicians. They would never try to bribe our government officials to pass legislation which would ensure huge truckloads of cash would keep flowing into their Corporate Bank Accounts! No, even thinking like that should result in someone getting charged with treason and given the death sentence. The Good Samaritan lobbyists for these places of business are just giving Politicians money out of the kindness of their heart. They know that Politicians are public servants, and make very little money. The companies are just giving elected officials a few extra shackles so they can make ends meet.
That is the reason money changes hands between Senators and Large Corporations. That reason and no other! The hundreds of billions of dollars the Government gave the banks in 2008 were just a little show of gratitude for getting the members of Congress through some lean years. Since getting this money, the banks have done the right thing. They know that, ultimately, the money came from us; the American Taxpayer, Of course they gave us a little kickback to show their gratitude. They barely raised our credit card interest rates at all; only 300% at the most! This rate change is our fault anyway; we should have read that flyer they sent in the mail two days before the change took effect. They also showed generosity when it came to ATM fees; it still costs under $3 on average for a non-customer to take their own money out. This is a small price to pay I say! If people don't want to pay this petty fee, they should just keep their money under their mattress like their great-great-great grandparents did. Also, while the banks did not waive their Insufficient Funds Charges, their customer service reps are very courteous. They always remind you to check your account before you spend any of the money you just gave them to deposit. Even though you gave the teller cash, they explain, it doesn't count as a deposit until the next day because you made it at 3:03 PM. That is well after the 3 PM cutoff time. Those tellers work hard 7 hour days! Three or four times every month they actually have to work 5 day weeks, too. They need those last two hours of the business day to count all the money people gave them that day. After a stressful day of drinking coffee and making change, they must be stressed out. Heaven forbid they lose count and have to start over! When you ask for a courtesy refund for these charges, the reps are always very polite when denying you. At least you know for next time. It's very nice they are concerned about your future. How parental of them! I don't know how someone could expect that money back anyway. After all, it is the customer’s fault that they don't understand Funds Availability. The bank is nice enough to list a chart right there on their website, behind 6 tabs and 18 sub-menus. So what if the chart is so confusing it would make an Actuaries eyes cross, it is there at least!
Being an American, it is our duty, our right, to support Corporate America. It would be a shame if the CEO of a company that lost 75% of its value the preceding year still didn't receive a huge bonus. He deserves to get a big check for more money than most people make in a lifetime because he is better than us. Plus, they have an image to uphold. Those suits they buy and cars they drive and mansions they live in are expensive. The selfish, ignorant American public wanting some of that money back is just plain wrong. So what if they have kids to feed, buy diapers for, put through college and support! Who cares if they have to put food on the table or need to pay ridiculously high health insurance premiums? That stuff is petty compared to making sure Wall Street Hot Shots remain filthy rich at all costs. If these well-educated, white collar, extremely wealthy people were forced to actually budget and not flaunt their wealth, the consequences would be astronomical. They are the privileged ones; the source of the stereotype Americans have in most other countries. If they all of a sudden didn't wear $20,000 suits and live in $6 million dollar houses, it would fuck up our image internationally. Greedy, lazy, advantageous Americans have been around since the days our rich, slave-owning, greedy founding fathers finished signed the Declaration of Independence in 1781. We, as a country, have worked hard for our reputation; we have earned it, Damn It! To have us surrender that now would be a crime. What else are we known for? - Shitty car making; ridiculous pharmaceutical commercials and Wal-Mart? That takes way too long to say. Greedy, rich and lazy just rolls off the tongue! We can't turn our backs on these people when they need us most! Besides, these Corporations have to support people, too- like all those workers in India and the Philippines, who they are gracious enough to employ, and pay almost $.25 an hour in wages! That's almost a shiny quarter! If these workers stay with the company and keep working those 14 hour days in unlit, stuffy rooms with no windows, taking no bathroom breaks and receiving no benefits of any kind, they might get a raise! Someday, God willing, they might actually make more than America's hardworking convicts! Just to think, those guys get paid A-Rod money, nearly $1 an hour on average, for doing much less strenuous work; in much better working conditions! They also get free rent and 3 meals a day, too. Talk about taking advantage of the system! Shame on them!
Everyone has to sacrifice, not just us. The Government was gracious enough to give all these big companies huge tax breaks, and that was even before the economy collapsed! They know how much it costs to run an International Company! With all companies like Wal-Mart, Verizon, HSBC, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, amongst others, do for us, I figure picking up the tab on a few hundred billion petty tax dollars is the least we can do.
These companies are the reason many of us even have jobs, and are able to pay those taxes! I feel bad for the companies sometimes. It costs so much money to run a business in this country that they often have to ship jobs overseas just to save money. They get tax breaks on the condition that they employ American workers; then suffer such hard times that they have to renege on the deal and fire those American workers; hiring cheap labor in Asia as a replacement. It must crush these companies to do this. At least we know they are smart shoppers. Some may frown upon this activity- saying it's wrong. I just consider it bargain hunting; kind of like when we use coupons to buy stuff. They just want to save money like everyone else. Who can blame them?
I am so thankful that, with all these Corporate Giants have going on, they still think enough of us to occasionally recall defective products which they have found could cause us- their valuable customers, harm. They have a whole department whose sole job is to weigh the risks and benefits of these recalls. This is very efficient, and saves them, and us- money. I mean, why spend $50 million dollars recalling a product if these experts deem that only 100 or so people will die if they don't. What's 100 people? That's $50,000 spent for each death. A person's life isn't worth that much, not when it would prevent millions more from enjoying that same product. That would be very bad press, and nobody wants bad press nowadays!
So, in closing, I think we should all personally write thank you letters to these big Corporations and banks for helping us out. They keep the economy going. So, what I need you all to do is to go to Staples and buy some markers and stationery. Be sure to use your credit card to pay for the purchase, as that money you pay in interest could pay 10 Burmese workers for a whole day! Now is not the time to be selfish! If you need to, please feel free to stop at your local Exxon station on your way and fill up. Don't want you running out of gas.
